  Direct charging under the sun does not appear to work for iphone. I had to charge up the internal battery first. I also have doubts on the capacity of the internal batter. it is stated as 3000 mA. But on a full charge can only charge my iphone from 0% to 60%. Another battery I have is only 1000mA but on a full charge can charge my battery up to 100%.
